The Gangetic River Dolphin: What, Where, Why?
Carcass of an endangered Gangetic river dolphin was found in Kulsi river, Assam recently.
Known by the name susu, huhu in Assam and as Shushuk in Bangladesh and Bengal.
It has a rectangular, ridgelike dorsal fin and females tend to be larger than males.
2017 reports said that the global Gangetic river dolphin population was less than 3,500.
The species is protected from international trade.
Also known as the ‘Tiger of the Ganges’ it plays a predatorial role.
They matter because it is a reliable indicator of the health of the entire river ecosystem.
Ganges river dolphin is a species of freshwater dolphin classified in the family Platanistidae.
